FortisBC asks residents of Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island to conserve gas

Issue with Westcoast Energy Inc.’s pipeline has led to supply shortage

January 31, 2023—Surrey, B.C.: Due to an issue with Westcoast Energy Inc.’s T-South 36 inch natural gas transmission line, FortisBC’s gas supply to the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island has been reduced. As such, FortisBC is asking all gas customers to conserve natural gas and limit non-essential use of gas.

FortisBC is working to bring additional supplies of gas online, including accessing gas supply from the United States and bringing increasing volumes of liquified natural gas (LNG) from its Tilbury and Mount Hayes facilities online. However, until we’ve strengthened our supply, it’s critical that FortisBC gas customers in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island conserve gas.

The easiest way to conserve natural gas is to lower your home’s thermostat and decrease hot water use if you heat with natural gas. It’s also important to avoid non-essential uses of natural gas like natural gas fireplaces or outdoor natural gas heating.
