Please note: With recent approval from the British Columbia Utilities Commission, all gas customers will have a portion of their gas automatically designated as Renewable Natural Gas2 beginning July 1, 2024. This will support B.C.’s clean energy transformation. No action is required from customers, and we’ll keep you up to date as more information becomes available.

Benefits of RNG for your business

  • Reduce your GHG emissions. By using RNG, you’re taking part in the transformation of B.C.’s energy future. Learn more about the environmental benefits of RNG.
  • Choose the best option for your budget. You can choose to designate five, 10, 25, 50 or 100 per cent of your gas usage as RNG. Whether you choose a little or a lot, you’re helping to reduce the amount of conventional natural gas needed in the gas system. Learn more about how much RNG costs.
  • Keep your current gas appliances and equipment. Because RNG works the same way as conventional natural gas, you can keep your existing gas appliances and equipment, making RNG an affordable lower-carbon energy option.

One B.C. business's journey to net zero with RNG

We’re excited to be offering sustainable energy options like RNG to our business customers, to help them meet their sustainability goals. Gemma Martini, chief executive officer of Martini Film Studios shares why she chose RNG for her business:

We’ve realized that we can make the biggest impact in reducing GHG emissions if we choose low carbon energy sources. And as a studio the way I do that is I choose to use Renewable Natural Gas from FortisBC. Once we set our objective for net zero, it was RNG that was the largest contributor to reducing our GHG emissions.

Converting to RNG was easy for us because we use the same equipment we had before… Sustainable energy means it’s reliable, affordable, readily available, and environmentally low-impact.

I'm proud of the fact that we've achieved net zero, I'm proud of the fact that I'm in an industry where it's super important to be sustainable. I'm proud of the fact that we are seen as leaders globally in our industry.

1When compared to the lifecycle carbon intensity of conventional natural gas. The burner tip emission factor of FortisBC’s current Renewable Natural Gas (also called RNG or biomethane) portfolio is 0.29 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per megajoule of energy (gCO2e/MJ). FortisBC’s current RNG portfolio lifecycle emissions are -22 gCO2e/MJ. This is below B.C.’s low carbon threshold for lifecycle carbon intensity of 36.4 gCO2e/MJ as set out in the 2021 B.C. Hydrogen Strategy.

2Renewable Natural Gas (also called RNG or biomethane) is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create low-carbon Renewable Natural Gas.
