Requesting electricity design services
If you’re building new, undergoing major renovations, or simply want to upgrade your main panel’s amperage, we’ll work with you to develop an electrical design, source materials and manage construction. Learn more about the process and how to get started.
Customer Design Build Program
A second option called the Customer Design Build Program is now also available. This allows customers to take a more active role in the design and construction of their project.
Through this program, customers work directly with a FortisBC pre-approved electrical design contractor on all aspects of their project. This option affords customers more flexibility to work within their own timeline. It’s best suited for builder/developers of larger residential subdivisions or commercial projects. Learn more about the Customer Design Build Program and how to get started.
Underground conduit system inspection
You can also schedule an underground conduit system inspection for your project online.
New electrical installations must meet all safety requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code, Technical Safety BC and FortisBC. For details about how to meet our requirements, builders and contractors should reference the Service and metering guide (CRL 1618) .
If you will be excavating or trenching or installing electrical conduits, also see the Specification for installation of underground conduit systems (CRL 1669).
Permit needed for electricity service installation
We can’t complete your service and energize without a permit (electrical affidavit) on site. Your electrician usually gets the necessary permit and leaves it on site. If there’s no permit on site when FortisBC employees arrive to install the electricity service, we have to charge a site visit fee of $246 to the person financially responsible for the project.
Total connected load
Commercial or unique residential service loads require a calculated connected load in order to provide an accurate design and cost estimate.
