Security deposits
Whether you’re a natural gas or electricity customer, there may be times when FortisBC reserves the right to establish a credit history with you.
Opening a residential gas or electricity account
If you want to open a residential account with us, you may be asked to pay a security deposit.
Opening a commercial gas or electricity account
All commercial customers, both gas and electricity, will need to pay a security deposit.
How much is a deposit?
Natural gas account - the amount of a standard security deposit is equal to the total of the two highest, consecutive monthly gas bills at the account address.
Electricity account - the amount of a standard security deposit is equal to the total of the highest bi-monthly bill or two highest consecutive monthly bills at the account address.
How to pay a deposit
Security deposits, for gas and electricity accounts, will be included on your first bill and can be paid by your choice of payment method.
How is the deposit returned?
Return of a security deposit typically occurs following the closing of an account or following a period of at least 12 months of good payment history. If it is determined that a deposit is no longer required on an account or a final bill has been paid, FortisBC will refund any remaining security deposit plus any accrued interest.
