Update on gas odour in Lower Mainland communities

Jan 17, 2024

SURREY, B.C.—January 17, 2024: On January 16, FortisBC received reports of a strong gas odour that has been affecting the communities of Ladner, Delta, Richmond and Vancouver. FortisBC takes all reports of gas odour very seriously.

As work was being performed on new equipment at the FortisBC Interconnect Station in Ladner, there was a controlled release of gas, not a leak as initially believed. While this was part of planned work, the release contained an elevated level of an odourant, which caused a strong smell in the surrounding communities. The strong smell was unexpected and, as a result, no communications on this activity were planned. We realize the residual odour was very strong in some areas, but it is expected to dissipate. Further investigation is needed to determine why there was excess odourant.

Public and employee safety is our top priority. We apologize for the inconvenience and concern that this may cause residents and commuters in the area. We have been in contact with local First Nations, municipal and emergency officials to provide information on our response.

Gas provided though our system is naturally odourless. FortisBC adds trace amounts of a pungent chemical called mercaptan so that it can be easily detected. Mercaptan is derived from naturally occurring compounds like hydrogen sulphide, which has a strong smell even in very low concentrations and is not hazardous to inhale with the quantity released in the atmosphere.

More information on natural gas safety is available at fortisbc.com.
