Heating system optimization for social housing

If you’re a housing provider that serves income-qualified people–including non-profit, co-op or Indigenous housing—our rebates can help you lower the cost of optimizing the performance of your existing gas heating equipment, with rebates of up to 75 per cent. These improvements can help you lower your energy use and operational costs.

Our team is here for you

Our account managers and energy solutions managers are here to answer your questions and help you get rebates to reduce the upfront cost of heating system optimization.

Eligibility

  1. You must be a FortisBC gas customer under any rate class except Rate 1.
  2. You must be a property owner or long-term leaseholder of an existing building or a builder/developer or property owner of a new construction project.
  3. Your hot water or steam boilers must be used to meet your site or facility's loads (e.g. process load, sanitization or space heating). Steam boilers installed to meet other operational needs (e.g. backup, standby or secondary boilers) are not eligible.
  4. The hot water or steam boilers must use gas only.
  5. Purchase date of products or services (as shown on the paid invoice) must be after December 19, 2024.
  6. You must submit an application and supporting documentation no later than 365 days after the purchase date of the products or services (as shown on the paid invoice).

Economizer: A stack economizer helps to extract heat from flue gas for pre-heating of make-up water but also other fluids (e.g. domestic hot water).

Economizer condensing: Like an economizer but provides additional efficiency by lowering the flue gas temperature and causing water vapor in the exhaust to condense, which releases latent heat and can be harnessed to further the energy efficiency of the system.

Parallel positioning: Installation of a parallel positioning system helps optimize combustion system efficiency. With parallel positioning, control valves for combustion air and natural gas fuel are positioned independently using individual actuators.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) control: Measurement of total substances (both organic and inorganic) in the water in the boiler to control the TDS levels as it can lead to scaling, corrosion, and reduced efficiency in boilers.

Oxygen control: These are oxygen sensors that measures the oxygen concentration in the flue gas and enables air supply adjustment based on real time measurements, ensuring optimal oxygen levels.

Energy and heat recovery ventilators

This measure installs heat exchangers between two air streams without mixing the two air streams to recover heat and/or moisture.

Hydronic additives

Hydronic additives work by reducing water’s surface tension, which improves water’s ability to receive and deliver heat.

Requirements

Hydronic additives

$450 per gallon

  • The building’s primary heating system must be hydronic.

Ozone laundry

An ozone laundry system generates ozone, a naturally occurring molecule, which helps clean fabrics by chemically reacting with soils in cold water. Adding an ozone laundry system(s) will reduce the amount of chemicals, detergents, and hot water needed to wash linens.

Measure

Rebate

Requirements

Ozone laundry

$75 per pound of washing capacity, up to 75 per cent of product cost

  • The ozone laundry system(s) must transfer ozone into the water through venturi injection or bubble diffusion.
  • For laundromats, the ozone laundry system(s) must be connected to both the hot and cold-water inlets of the clothes washing machine(s).

Tune-ups

Tune-ups are maintenance procedures aimed at optimizing the efficiency and performance of a boiler. They will typically involve inspection, adjustment, testing and maintenance.
