FortisBC receives Environmental Certificate from Squamish Nation for Eagle Mountain Woodfibre Gas Pipeline

SQUAMISH, BC – On June 24, 2016, Squamish Nation Chiefs and Council voted to approve an Environmental Assessment Agreement for the proposed Eagle Mountain – Woodfibre Gas Pipeline Project and issued an Environmental Certificate to FortisBC.

As part of the Environmental Assessment Agreement, Squamish Nation approved the use of the Mount Mulligan location near Squamish for FortisBC’s natural gas compressor station.

The Squamish Nation’s independent environmental review began more than two years ago. The decision follows the Squamish Nation’s approval of an Environmental Assessment Agreement and Environmental Certificate for the proposed Woodfibre LNG project, on October 14, 2015.

The provincial environmental review of the EGP Project is ongoing. A decision by provincial ministers is expected later this year, once that process concludes.

FortisBC is proposing to expand a section of its existing Vancouver Island natural gas transmission system so the proposed Woodfibre LNG project can access natural gas from northern B.C. The system provides natural gas service to customers in Squamish, Whistler, the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island. For information about the proposed project, visit talkingenergy.ca.
