Inclusive excellence: building a safe and welcoming workplace
October 30, 2024
We’re all about making sure our workplace is not just safe and inclusive, but also a place to grow and thrive. We believe that when we empower our employees and embrace diverse perspectives, everyone benefits—especially as we work towards a lower-carbon energy future for British Columbians.
Recognition as a top employer
We’re excited to share that our dedication to providing a safe and inclusive workplace has earned us a spot as one of B.C.’s top employers! Thanks to our application in 2023, we’ve been featured in this year’s Mediacorp Canada Inc. BC's Top Employers ranking. The award highlights companies that offer exceptional work environments, based on everything from workplace atmosphere and benefits to employee communications and community involvement.
To be named one of B.C.’s top employers reflects FortisBC’s dedication to supporting the well-being and professional growth of our employees. We believe that by fostering a culture of belonging and embracing diverse teams with varied backgrounds, experiences and perspectives we not only enrich our work environment but also fuel creativity and innovation.

Our workforce is our greatest strength
The energy industry is changing fast, and our team’s resilience is key to our success. We’ve built a culture where innovation, collaboration and support are the norm. This helps us navigate complex projects while maintaining a high standard of service for our customers.
“I enjoy being part of a team that really pushes for your growth and wants you to succeed,” said Samantha Syrenne, fleet services coordinator. “I think that’s one of the greatest things about working for FortisBC.”
We invest heavily in our team’s well-being with comprehensive wellness programs, flexible work options and strong health and safety measures. Last year, we rolled out a new Employee and Family Assistance Program, offering everything from legal advice and financial help to health coaching and counseling. It’s all about making sure our employees feel supported both professionally and personally.
Employees are supported with professional development and training opportunities throughout the year.
Empowering our people and communities
When our employees succeed, so does our company. We’re committed to providing plenty of career development opportunities to support our employees’ ongoing professional development and training. Whether it’s leadership programs, mentorships or scholarships, we’re here to help our team grow.
“There are opportunities in all areas of the industry,” shared Tony Zhao, project engineer. “For example, I'm in engineering but there are also opportunities in project management or out in the field in operations and construction, so you definitely have the opportunity to explore and tailor your career in the path and direction that you want.”
Our employees live and work in the communities that we serve and believe it’s important to contribute to the well-being of our communities. Through charitable initiatives, volunteer programs and partnerships with local organizations, we’re committed to making a positive difference in the communities where we live and work.
“I love the work we get to do, and I love that we get to make a difference in the province. I wouldn't trade this for anything,” added Ray Urner, QA/QC technician.

Advancing diversity, equity and inclusion with a culture of belonging
We believe that diversity makes us stronger. We’re proud of our ongoing efforts to build a culture of belonging where everyone feels valued and included. Our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are woven into what we do, from our policies and practices to our day-to-day interactions.
“The culture and diversity we have at FortisBC has evolved in the last 20 years since I’ve been here,” shared Kirk Pranjivan, manager, IS applications. “It’s the culture that brings people together.”
We’ve rolled out several DEI programs, like employee resource groups, unconscious bias training and partnerships with organizations that support underrepresented communities. In 2023, we clocked 14,000 hours of DEI-related training—up from 9,000 hours in 2022!

Continuing our journey
Growing our workplace culture is a journey that evolves with the needs of our people and communities
and the changing workforce. As we look forward, we remain committed to enhancing our workplace culture, supporting our employees’ growth and championing DEI at every level of our organization.
If you're passionate and innovative and you like working with a ton of smart people, this is a great place for you.
